Best Atlanta Spine Specialty Practitioners
What makes a neurosurgeon great? Getting the best training, and having plenty of experience helps the skill level of any surgeon. Neurosurgeons in particular go through over 12 years of education, medical schooling, residency, training and often further certifications. Our spine surgeons are board certified, which is an extra step of proof towards their ability to perform at a high level. It’s important to ask your surgeon if they have board certifications so you have a peace of mind that they’re among the best spine surgeons in Atlanta.
Spine surgery is something to consider if your symptoms are serious, and conservative treatments haven’t been working to alleviate pain or debilitating symptoms. Your local Atlanta spine doctor will guide you through what a potential surgery might look like and the exacts steps before, during and after. There may be alternatives to surgery as well, and possibly different types of treatment plants depending on your diagnosis. Choosing a doctor with experience across all types of spinal surgery is a massive benefit since they may be able to offer the best solution.
Local Atlanta Spine Treatment Centers
We have locations in the Atlanta area for spine treatment, medical second opinions, pain management and more. If you suspect you may have a herniated disc after a car accident or simply need an evaluation to ensure your neck or back is fine we can help. Symptoms may not show up after a traumatic impact such as a fall or car crash and spine injuries could show up hours or days after the initial event. That’s why seeing a spine physician soon after an accident is recommended so a medical professional with years of experience evaluating spinal injuries can give you an accurate diagnosis.
Our surgery center in Stockbridge has an Open MRI machine to help give the most accurate spine injury diagnosis possible. We also have an Open MRI in our Decatur spine surgery center. Our third spine center in Newnan gives you the option to see a spine specialist if you live in that area as well. You can fill out the form here to request a doctor consultation, or call 770-997-0600 to talk to our medical staff today.
Types of Non-Surgical Spine Treatments Offered
Surgery will often not be the first option presented to you unless it’s an emergency, or your condition calls for a specific type of surgery. We may be skilled Atlanta spine surgeons, but we can also perform plenty of other non-surgical spine treatments to help resolve pain and underlying conditions. Pain management helps you deal with the chronic pain you may experience while your body heals during a spine injury. Here are some of the pain management techniques we can provide:
- Facet Joint Injections
- Epidural Injections
- Radiofrequency Ablation
- Spinal Cord Stimulation
- PRP Injections
- Shoulder Injections
Types of Spine Surgery We Provide
When surgery is the right option for you there are many types of approaches your doctor can take when aiming to resolve your condition. Pain from the neck likely comes from the cervical spine area, and pain in the lower back might come from the lumbar spine area. There are different types of surgery depending on the location of the spine, and even different ways to go about these surgeries such as minimally invasive surgery or endoscopic surgery. Our spine surgeons have experience in the full suite of spinal procedures and these include:
- Laser Spine Surgery
- Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion
- Artificial Disc Replacement
- Spinal Laminectomy
- Lateral Lumbar Interbody Fusion
- Microdiscectomy and Foraminotomy
- Carpal Tunnel Surgery
Deciding to get spinal surgery is an important decision, so being fully informed on the topic is vital. Talk at length with your doctor and come up with any questions you might have about the operation beforehand so you can make an informed decision if it’s an option for you. Your spine doctor is there to help you heal, restore mobility, relieve pain and get you back to normal life.

Where does back pain come from?
Back pain is one of the most common reasons people in Atlanta visit doctors, and are then referred to back pain specialists. One of the first thing your back doctor is going to do is diagnose where the back pain is coming from. There can be many reasons for pain in the lower back, but a few of the most common reasons for back pain are:
- Muscles or ligament strain
- Herniated discs or bulging discs
- Arthritis or osteoporosis
Arthritis, or osteoarthritis, is a condition in which joints degenerate over time. This type of arthritis can affect the spine and cause back pain, with increased risk with age. Osteoporosis is a disease that weakens your bones which begin to have less density and strength. Bones are more susceptible to fracture which can also cause back pain if it happens in your spine. Muscle or ligament strains are also known as “pulling a back muscle.” Sometimes this is the result of muscle overuse, or improper form during an exercise and causes inflammation, potential swelling, and soreness to the touch. These types of muscle related injuries heal within 4 to 6 weeks though.
What is a herniated disc?
The spine is made up of vertebral bones stacked on top of one another with discs in between each with a tough outer layer and jelly like inner nucleus. The purpose of these spinal discs is to act as shock absorbers and allow for a wide range of movement with the spine. A traumatic shock to the spine can cause injury to these discs though, such as what happens during a car accident or a sports injury. The compression from this impact can cause the disc to bulge and possibly rupture leading to a herniated disc. The inner nucleus bulges outwards and if it breaks the outer wall it is called a herniated disc. This kind of disc in the lower back can put pressure on nearby nerves in the spine that affect the thighs, legs, and feet. If the disc is in the neck you might feel symptoms in your shoulders, arms and hands.
The symptoms of a herniated disc include numbness of the legs / feet or arms / hands, pain in the back or neck, and possibly bladder control issues. Herniated disc symptoms can worsen if left untreated, so it’s generally a good idea to get checked out by a back pain specialist, like a neurosurgeon, if you suspect a herniated disc. In the case of a car accident you should probably get checked as soon as you can, since some symptoms might not start showing up for hours to days after the incident.
